About the same time that Imogen was boarding a Glasnevin-bound bus, Otto, not far away, came out again into Anglesea Street in some confusion of mind, having found the nest empty and the bird flown, for not ten minutes before he had been confronted with her tidy bed, both windows adjusted half-open on the latch, a lost hairclip on the floor, a lingering scent of her perfume, her sad presence, and no information whatsoever from the two preparing breakfast, who said they had heard and seen nothing.

Nothing. He stood on the pavement before Agnew’s public clock facing towards the quays, from which direction she would surely come, his eyes dazzled by the glare reflected from the roadway where four wet streets converged. It was impossible to see anyone approaching from any of those four points at twenty yards, due to the positively intractable force of whitish light that flooded the junction.

With an empty briefcase under his arm, he remained at his post until the hands of the clock stood at twelve-fifteen. But Imogen Langrishe did not come.
